During internet safety week, the school decided that the issue of cyber bullying required attention and children needed to be made aware of this from an early age.
Facts and figures were collected on the effects of cyber bullying and most notably the number of people who keep it to themselves and hidden. The school started to look at how cyber bullying started and how it could escalate further.
A unit on internet safety and cyber bullying was taught by Jack using research pupils in his class had carried out as part of a task. Jack’s year 7 pupils did an assembly on cyber bullying, researching facts and illustrating ways to avoid being a victim of cyber bullying.
As well as highlighting the dangers of social networking and internet communications, the project also aimed to educate children on what problems can be caused from giving out personal details over the internet.
After contacting the local primary school in order for the pupils to visit the school, Jack acted as leader in ensuring the project was completed. The completion of the project took place outside of class time. A worksheet was designed for primary school pupils to run alongside a discussion based task that can be applied to small groups of pupils.
In terms of measuring the success of the project, Jack and the pupils have gauged this through the positive feedback they have received from both the headmaster and teachers at the primary school.
